The story begins when Dan meets his powerful year-old mentor Socrates, an all-night gas station attendant. Guided by this wise old mentor and tempted by an elusive and playful woman named Joy, Dan journeys through everyday reality and metaphysical realms. He travels the paths of flesh and spirit, romance and terror, light and darkness, laughter and magic, learning new ways to see the world and live life fully. Thematically, this tale of the eternal human quest for the meaning of life is the path of transformation and enlightenment.
It uncovers concepts known deep inside but really allowed to wake up and be content with this knowledge. There is no need to search, so just be happy now! Love is the only reality of the world, because it is all One - and the only laws are paradox, humor and change.
After reading Way of the Peaceful Warrior don't tuck it away on a bookshelf to gather dust. Keep it close at hand, and recapture guidance from many of the metaphors sprinkled throughout the story. The secret of happiness, Socrates so aptly points out, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.
It may even change the lives of many who peruse its pages. Stanley Krippner. Most people who've read Way of the Peaceful Warrior or seen the movie already know a few aspects of my life. It emerged from an intensive search lasting more than a decade. It blends autobiographical fact with flights of imagination to convey vivid reminders to my readers about life's promise and potential. Pablo Picasso once said that art is a lie that helps us to see the truth. Way of the Peaceful Warrior serves as an introduction to the way, detailed in the numerous books that have followed over the years.
Each of these books -- including titles like No Ordinary Moments, The Laws of Spirit, and The Four Purposes of Life -- presents another facet of the peaceful warrior's way -- an approach to living that I teach worldwide. After my first book was finished, I didn't write another one for ten years -- until the intervention and influence of other mentors and life experiences provoked new writings that followed over the years.

Dan teaches worldwide and has influenced people from all walks of life, including leaders in the fields of health, psychology, education, business, politics, sports, entertainment and the arts. For more info: peacefulwarrior. From the Back Cover Way of the Peaceful Warrior has become one of the most beloved spiritual sagas of our time.
Shared among friends and families, it is translated into more than twenty languages and has inspired people of all ages. It speaks to the peaceful warrior in each of us. Countless readers have been moved to laughter and tears -- and even to moments of illumination -- as they rediscover life's larger meaning and purpose. During his junior year at the University of California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor nicknamed Socrates at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a world-champion gymnast.
But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based on an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate the coming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive woman Joy, and the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power and success.
To our readers: The books we publish are our contribution to an emerging world based on cooperation rather than on competition, on affirmation of the human spirit rather than on self-doubt, and on the certainty that all humanity is connected. Our goal is to touch as many lives as possible with a message of hope for a better world.
Yet another first-person spiritual odyssey, this one from a gymnast whose shaman is an old grease monkey. That so many gurus in this kind of literature live humbly reminds one of the old New Yorker cartoon in which the society matron asks her capitalist husband, "If you're so rich, how come you're not smart? However one takes his professions of sagacity, as narrator as well as author, he has ample skill and showmanship, though one gets the impression that one has heard it all before.
The next morning, immediately after breakfast, I walked down to Harmon Gymnasium, where I'd be training six days a week, four muscle-straining, somersaulting, sweaty hours each day, pursuing my dreams of becoming a champion. Truly an amazing book for those in a self discovery phase of their lives. This book is a super simple and quick read giving the illusion that it isn't filled with wisdom that will resonate with you for years to come. Nothing could be further from the truth. Beautifully written in a way that almost anyone can relate to, the book does an excellent job of opening your mind and helping you realize that wherever you are is okay.
In the vein of many Buddhist texts, the idea is to be in the moment so that you can fully appreciate your life gross oversimplification but you get the point but instead of Dan Millman just preaching this to you, he tells a beautiful story through the eyes of a college gymnast who thinks he has it all figured out. This college gymnast happens upon a man named Socrates who very quickly informs him that he doesn't know anything. Socrates then goes on to teach him many lessons on happiness and how to be in life for real deep fulfillment and it is a story that may very well leave you in tears.
The book is fantastic, just do yourself a favor and read it. Holy guacamole. I pick my first read of the new year so carefully, so thoughtfully, and I kept thinking What will that say about the next days? As a graduate of a small, Catholic university, the existentialistic, winding manner of the writing was oddly comforting.
The Jesuits do love their mandatory philosophy and theology classes, you know. Myogi for good measure. Bottom line? It was precisely what I needed at precisely the right moment. A story and its lessons are only made useful if shared. Everything is a lesson. Trust your life. Everything has a purpose, a purpose, a purpose Let the pain purify your mind and body.
It will burn through many obstructions Do your best; let God handle the rest. My wood shop teacher tried to get me to read this in high school just as I was beginning to go down an ugly road in life. Long story short, I never read the book. What did he know! My road was disastrous to my life, health, family and friends and really only just got back on track 5 years ago and I came across this book and it brought me back, 23 years back to the old man in my wood shop class who had my best interest in his heart.
This book is a great story and very inspirational. I can now only wonder what might have happened if I read this book back then and maybe talked to my teacher about it, learned from his old wisdom and gave him a chance or myself a chance. This is one of the must-reads of the self-awareness and empowerment movement. It is the story of a champion college athlete who stumbles across a man who teaches him the tai-chi principle of non-resistance: Don't fight what comes your way, use it.
But it's a fascinating and informing story in any event. Entertaining and super enlightening. Millman has a way of storytelling that keeps your interest and makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the story as if it were real-life. I had heard about the movie and watched it first. I personally enjoyed it and then when I told a friend about it, he got a serious look on his face and said, "You HAVE to read the book.
It changed my life. It's just a magical book. You must check it out. Your goal is not invulnerability, but vulnerability - to the the world, to life, and therefore, to the Presence you felt. Each book is centered on opening ourselves up to the possibility of more: showing up, getting engaged and being ready to grow and learn. I have vastly benefitted from these works the confirm that a spiritual practice is required for true success.

I bought this book after watching the film with my children on movie night, the film was very entertaining and very powerful in its message to the soul. So much so I bought the book and read it from cover to cover in the space of a week making notes on the many pearls of wisdom to be found within it.
It's a path we should all follow and indeed we all need to follow if we truly are to evolve from the animals that we are to the peaceful yet strong beings that we could be. Find her first; then one thing will lead to the next. If I found her, she might have something to teach me, and might direct me to the other people and places Socrates had spoken of. As I lay in bed that night, a part of me wanted to head straight for the airport and catch a plane to Honolulu, but more immediate issues demanded my attention: I was about to compete for the last time in the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, then graduate from college and get married—hardly the best time to run off to Hawaii on a wild-goose chase.
With that decision, I fell asleep—in a sense, for five years. The latter procedure is more difficult, and therefore, unpopular. After a special dinner, Linda and I spent our brief honeymoon in a Berkeley hotel. I remember waking before dawn, unaccountably depressed. With the world still cloaked in darkness, I slipped out from under the rumpled covers and stepped softly out onto the balcony so as not to disturb Linda.
As soon as I closed the sliding glass door, my chest began to heave and the tears came. I could not understand why I felt so sad, except for a troubling intuition that I had forgotten something important, and that my life had somehow gone awry. This sense would cast a shadow over the years to follow. After graduation, I left the familiar college routine and my athletic career behind me.
Linda was pregnant, so it was time for me to grow up and find work. We moved to Los Angeles, where I sold life insurance. Then I learned that a coaching position had opened up at Stanford University. I applied for and got the job. We moved back to northern California; our daughter Holly was born. To all appearances I led a charmed life—so I continued to deny the feeling that something felt fundamentally wrong. Four years passed. The Vietnam War. The moon landing.
Meanwhile, I immersed myself in the insular world of university politics, professional aspirations, and family responsibilities. My experiences with Socrates—and his words about the woman in Hawaii, the school in Japan, and some kind of book in the desert—faded into the dark recesses of my memory and then were lost in the shadows.
In I left Stanford to accept a faculty position at Oberlin College in Ohio, hoping that I might outrun my depression and strengthen our marriage. I envied her comfort. I had once viewed myself as a knight in shining armor. Now the armor had rusted. Even as I played the role of a wise college professor, I felt like a charlatan. I was no longer good company, not even for myself. Overstressed and out of shape, I lost my physical edge and self-respect.
Even worse, I was going through the motions, having lost any sense of the deeper purpose or reason for my existence. I started to wonder: Could I continue to pretend that everything was well when my heart and guts told me something else?
Would I have to pretend for the rest of my life? Linda sensed my discontent, and we drifted further apart—she found other, more satisfying relationships, until the weakening thread that held us together finally snapped, and we decided to separate. I moved out on a cold day in March. Two hours later I had completed the application. Three weeks later, I was awarded the grant. A window had opened; I had a direction once more, if only for the summer.
But where would I travel? The answer came during a yoga class I had joined to get back into some kind of shape. Joseph had lived in Mysore, India, for a time, and had spoken positively of his experiences there. I had also read books on Indian saints, sages, and gurus, as well as on Vedantic philosophy.
