Compiled from not one but all three of the Meltdown of Control events at Berlin, Tokyo and London, it's been re-edited by Zbigniew to form some kind of coherent listening experience. What with the opening passages of screaming feedback, clashing metal and siren-like wails, it's intended to convey an apocalyptic vision of disaster and doom, but you'll soon find yourself tuning out, and it's as indifferent as the sound of a train going by.

A very long train. This is partly because I think it's technically difficult to translate the sheer presence of loud noise onto CD successfully - the frequencies start blending into each other very quickly and can end up as a thick mulch of chicken gumbo on the tape. The CD has its merits, and It isn't so bad an experience as the full ghastliness of being there, but it's some way from realising the vision of unrestrained, dystopian wildness that the instigators must have had in mind.

I can't remember ever hearing guitar noise being rendered in such a wonderfully spastic, spasmodic and incoherent fashion. The fact that its creator, the gnomus barbu Donald Miller, is a semi-magickal streetwise genius makes it all the more compelling - he is deliberately playing out a psycho-drama of forced primitivism, a sage playing the fool, a rich man dressed in tatters. These treated guitar sounds, originally released on a cassette format and later reissued in vinyl, have been force- fed through the narrow funnels of processes and distortion that shred, torture and mutilate the original sources; the traces of remaining sound are like the whimpers of a willing slave accepting a whipping from his-her Grand Master, chained to the brass bedpost with manacles and leather bonds.

Middle-class highbrow wimps have always spumed heavy metal's maltreatment of the guitar since the days of Hendrix onwards, for the same prissy reasons that they object to the rape scene in A Clockwork Orange. They assume that the guitar is a woman, basing that glib assumption on the curves of a solid -body electric resembling those of a woman's torso, and reckon that Pete Townsend's climactic smashing of the axe amounted to cheap sexual pyrotechnics.

Pathetic mealy-mouthed fools! They ignore the possibilities of mind-expanding freedom that are attainable through sexual excess, De Sadean pursuits, and lack real knowledge of the erotic-magic systems subscribed to by Harry Smith he used to bottle his own congealed sperm and keep it in the fridge , who copied it from Aleister Crowley. To be truthful I'm not speaking from experience, but you can sense the same intense, single-minded devotion has fed into creating these solo guitar works.

If you're expecting high volume screechy feedback, by the way. Donald Miller, as he himself will delight in informing you, is the guitarist-feedback part of the Borbetomagus act, who have been unleashing their Iron-John styled free jazz electronic mayhem on the unwilling ears of the world since It's about time that Miller, an exceptionally well-read master of the esoteric arts, got himself a look-in as a soloist.

Decorated with a sleeve collage of the artist's own making that merely reinforces all the above sentiments and images. In this time of excessive free choice, we're just surrounded with too many distractions anyway, none of us can resist and all of us have succumbed. At least one of the CDs below darn near led to a personal epiphany for this listener over tlx- Easter weekend. I'd like more of them, perception-changing, mystical episodes, but it isn't easy.

Anyway, I'm sad and lonely and I'm just jealous of all you other happy people with your interesting lives. Ascetic music fits my ascetic life. Each of our friends below is one way or another loosely associated with a s New Yoik 'scftool' of music, some of whose team players embraced use of electronics, total simplicity, and above all extremely long duration in its compositions.

Ttiis led to one critic calling them minimalists, a term which had already been applied to certain visual artists in the same country and at the same time. Some of these musicians have found a pathway to God through the drone. Angus Maclise found enlightenment via the Nppie route to Kathmandu. Charlemagne Palestine ignored them all and remained tme to his Jewish roots, and developed a Nghly eccentric and personal devotional method of perfonning from it.

They may not store religion or even told religious beliefs, but it's interesting to me how in the handful of records reviewed below, there's this linking strand in their histories - a church keeps recurring as a significant building where these artists have met, performed, or lived. Others, like La Monte Young, appear to have become slightly isolated. Most, however, have remained true to the ideal of lengthy duration, and when we're faced with these recordings I feel we owe it to them and ourselves to make time to listen to the whole tiling in one sitting if possible.

He is now proving more than a match for any of his more famous contemporaries, such as Philip Glass or Terry Riley, who both have their impressive back catalogue of large scale holy works behind them. The advantage we must accord Charlemagne, in all of these minimal monotone monuments, is his humanity - he isn't simply relying on mathematical systems, or prepared structures, or loop- delay machines, or strings of endlessly repeated arpeggios on a piano.

The music comes directly from him, it is composed of him as much as C N K I. But then, not even the combined sexual drive and larger-than-life personalities of Morrison, Hendrix and Joplin could muster the power of Schlingen-BUngen. Letting the full sonorities of that antiquated construct blast forth, he turns it into a roaring behemoth without equal. Sculpting with the clouds, moulding the light and sunshine, as though he were creating a new world and the struggle for the souls of millions were in the balance, while he wrestles the devil with his day- covered mitts.

How I love organ music! But Bach is quite airless somehow, the baroque cerebral mathematics of it though sublime gets in the way of enjoyment. Messiaen - well's he's just plain eerie especially playing his own compositions , a warped sensibility deeply contemplating the Catholic mysteries through music. With Charlemagne Palestine's approach to the organ - one simple chord, explored for a very long time in all its richness - it may be rugged and unsophisticated if you wanna compare it to Handel, but at least the listener can BREATH.

Air is everywhere in this recording, you can hear it and you can feel it coursing through the very organ pipes. And in the music - hits of pure oxygen, of the kind that can sustain your heart and mind and lungs. He arranged for a performance at a tiny village near his festival in Groningen, which had the best church organ in the vicinity.

This CD is not that performance, but another one from 1 when the team returned to the exact same church and recorded the music with better equipment. Issued with extensive sleeve notes by Ingram Marshall, friend of Palestine and composer, whose excellent work is represented this issue in another section. Charlemagne has expressed a slight envy of other more famous muskians of his school and generation who not only enjoy more success and fame than he, but also boast the more visible manifestation of same - ie lots of CDs available in the marketplace, betokening a satisfactory record deal and corporate sponsorship.

David Tibet put out Karenina on the basis of his own interest in the musk and life of Charlemagne Palestine. Tibet knew no rest until he had secured an original vinyl copy of Strumming Music on the Shandar label, and soon agreed to release a recent-ish work of Palestine's from 1 , recorded to accompany a retrospective exhibition of his sculptures and photographs.

Close friends of Palestine have confessed that he can work himself into a self-pitying state where his own personal heartache becomes the centre of the world. This is nearly the sound that's on the record, as he moans and worries away at the irresolvable problem before him. The shame, the pity of it Art transcends specific emotions, details of life, and makes them universal - transforming a petty problem into a pattern that we can all share and learn from. Rubbing his own sore heart until he can bear the pain no longer, yet carrying on.

You need the emotional stamina of a Hercules to perform this! He is a past master of making musk by twisting and tweaking the electronk circuits, having worked with an early version of the Buchla system in the s. Recorded at the VPRO studios for Dutch radio in January ; it was followed by a live performance at the Roxy club in Amsterdam, which was unfortunately not recorded.

On this studio disc a limited edition only available from the Staalplaat website , Charlemagne starts off solo to be joined by musical interpolations from Pan Sonk. The long sustained chords have all the wrong, mixed notes - generating a near-unbearable tension which many civilians will find dismaying, but you troopers will be rewarded if you stay the course.

There were a few items that surfaced in 1 , but I believe this is about the most desirable of them in terms of sound quality and musical value. Reed Streams was the debut recording of Riley's which was issued as a private press LP on his own label. At this time he was playing in his loft, working with a simple delay effect on his soprano saxophone.

Later, he started doing it live at a venue called the Electric Circus. If you know and enjoy Riley's work, this one is a must. L'lnfonte were a crazy band of loons in Montreal who, picking up on the spirit of the times, wound up recording an anarchic version of In C Their up-tempo, syncopated take on this classic of modem composition has to be heard to be believed, but don't let it be mistaken for anarchic frivolity - in fact it's very much in keeping with the democratic free-for-all spirit of the piece.

They were a mixture of rock, jazz and classical musicians, and their big band here consists of reed players, trumpeters, trombonists, with piano, guitars bass and drums. Imagine a kind of real-life Muppet Show band crossed with a low-rent Arkestra.

They're all wearing paper crowns and robes in the pictures, an intriguing image which is not disappointed by their music. Pretty indispensable really! If that's not enough for you. His music as represented on these CDs works from the 1 s is frankly excellent and In fact seems so varied and powerfully original as to bear none of the cliched hallmarks of minimal music that lazy critics are so quick to seize upon.

It moves slowly, staying in one divine place for a long time, and never slips its composure to sound like anything less than the soundtrack for a picnic on the moon. Like being offered a glass of quicksilver to drink, then gradually finding your entire body is changing into a new material. Mostly performed by Gibson using overdubs, this paean to nature was mixed by technicians from the Bird Call Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology!

Additional enjoyment can be derived from the great photo of Gibson playing this piece at the organ in Washington Square Church. Many more expressive delights and astonishing long pieces await the happy listener who locates and listens to these fine discs.

After all the talking about the Theatre of Eternal Music I wondered if we would ever have a chance to hear some of this music? Amazingly, it lives up to the promise too. He stuck around on the planet long enough at least to migrate from The Dream Syndicate band to appear in an early incarnation of The Velvet Underground, although according to John Cale this alone was enough of a miracle.

Perhaps his life is the dream of all men who want to be free. Free enough at least to travel to exotic locales, live with strange people, paint your body green, and never care about such bourgeois concerns as mortgages, life insurance, or preparing breakfast the next day. The sleevenote and perhaps more importantly the stunning photographs here by the psychedelic photographer and poet Ira Cohen do nothing to dispel the myth of MacLise. Cohen knew him, and with remarkable economy he plunges the reader into a bizarre world of ancient religions, shamanism, lost texts, Dreamweapons, powerful drugs, trance music, and underground movies - a world peopled with such luminaries as John Cale, Tony Conrad, movie maker Jack Smith, Terry Jennings, and Brion Gysin.

The long title track is the best one. Angus on the hand drum is joined by wife Hetty MacLise on the organ, along with friends on flute, guitar, dulcimer and voices. Invasion of the Thunderbolt Pagoda was recorded as the soundtrack to a film made in 1 The cosmic trip brought visions and awareness that they all apparently shared, and were compelled to mark the occasion by playing this music live at the screening of the film in St Mark's Church of the Epiphany.

This is the recording you will hear. There are ragged edges, uncertain strokes of the bow, and moments where everyone gets lost. Delirious beauty! Have you ever seen a Mondrian painting up close and admired the rough edges where his brushes couldn't quite make a straight line, where the surfaces of pure white were slightly uneven?

That makes it even better. Human beings are making this music not Gods from another planet. However, these imperfections might result from the tape quality rather than the performance itself. John Cale pushes a slightly different picture. Calc and Conrad's I?

The sheer power in the dashing notes of these stringed instruments, relentlessly sawin 8 awa X Into oblivion, simply makes the listener sick. For the first 1 8 months from 1 , it.. It bursts with an intense fruity life! This recording hints at the darker powers of a drone, of a harshness and intensity that would keep idle dabblers at bay. Once immersed inside its constricting coils for several hours, the delirium could turn to agony as it painfully shreds your eardrums and massages your brain - whether you want it to stop or not.

And the personality clashes between these five intense, intelligent and highly articulate creators must have been horrendous. Young had already established himself into this composer position by 1 , and into the early 1 s through his association with the Fluxus artists, who taught him the value of presenting his work as a simple verbal score.

It's too bad their music has become the soundtrack to a soap opera. It really has the power to transform people. Then the trouble started; an unauthorised release, a package and cover design many regard as very poor, and more fuel to a long-standing feud. Anyway, if you can still find a copy, I would recommend you listen nonetheless. Part of Tony Conrad's Audio Artkive series, it's a set of film soundtracks and associated recordings that he worked on the early 1 s, centred around the work of jack Smith.

If you want to improve on that, try and seek out any one of his films and see how far you get finding an arthouse cinema that has the guts to screen them. Flaming Creatures, reckoned to be one of his peaks of achievement, is an outlandish, utterly bonkers and supremely charming piece of underground film-making. It simply features his friends and other weirdos dressed up in bizarre garb one of them is La Monte Young in drag - bet he wishes he could live that down!

Then an earthquake strikes and the ceiling falls on top of their writhing bodies. His life was wracked with despair - 'why bother to shave when I can't even think of a reason to get up in the morningf goes a line from Blonde Cobra a film by Ken Jacobs which he appeared in and provided the soundtrack for , and he amused himself with pornography in between creating his artworks. These artworks were far from minimal; every frame of Flaming Creatures is alive with detail, movement light and shade, and sumptuous decadent beauty bursting out of the frame.

As you will hear - when you tune into the first half of this split CD. Getting there firstest with the mostest isn't everything, though. According to La Monte Young, Maxfield would prepare a tape collage by cutting up tape sections and fishing them at random out of glass bowls. But, unlike John Cage, he was never satisfied with pure chance results, and reserved the right to continue modifying the work until it pleased him.

Delicate, strange, arrestingly beautiful; like a very lucid and peculiar dream. Maxfield moved to New York from his home town of Seattle, having studied with important European composers. Even though he took over teaching the same course from John Cage.

Maxfield was the first to proclaim the value of working with electronic sounds for their own sake, and not simply reprocessed tapes of 'naturar noises. His pupils included La Monte Young who assisted him with the realisation of some works , and Joseph Byrd, who later formed the psychedelic electronic band The United States of America.

Do not miss this one! These four pieces however are just pure originality, highly significant in their ground-breaking advances, and a sheer delight to hear. We'll give Harold Budd his due next time around, folks. He was aged 42 and we're given to understand it was a drug-related death; in this he joins Terry Jennings and Angus MacLise as tragic victims of the darker side of 1 s counter-culture TT 4 i i J km newworldrecords erols. Slapp Happy impress with their skills, rather than amaze with their adventurousness. The musicianship they possess is impeccable, with immaculate keyboard and guitar playing, looking effortless. Which is probably why Chris Cutler likes them too.

The penchant for dense, lyrical invention is ingenious. Dagmar Krause on the vocals, naturally. A great delivery of this detailed miniature, an Old Master painting in song. Was ft through Martin Millard, or did you know the New York artists first? Jerry Moriarty was, and Is, a true maverick - love his work. And Ben Katchor, now enjoying some success with a weekly strip.

Did Picture Story get beyond two issues f What affinities did you have with these eccentrics of the comic strip? Katchor seems not very far away from you, with his love of detail, his semi-imaginary cityscapes, his fictional catalogues of absurd objects. We had affinities of taste in art, music and literature.

Ben had a collection of strange and wonderful records - a lot of Yiddish songs among them. He and Jerry Moriarty used to play music together, privately Ben plays clarinet , but I regret to say I never met Moriarty or heard them play. Ben introduced me to Martin Millard in a Hampstead pub c. I recall M. Partly, no doubt, because my father is an illustrator children's books mainly , I wanted to take the concept of illustration somewhere else, to find a form in which images and texts participated in a new way.

This was the late 70s. For me. The Large Glass demonstrates the potential of illustration. Duchamp had been a mediocre painter and occasional cartoonist before embarking on his course as iconoclast. The album, Kew. EP How about your other drawings and comic strip work? He was a journalist working for a new paper, The Sunday Correspondent He suggested I work up some ideas for a strip. One of the ideas I came up with was about a faceless philosophical tot. The Sunday Correspondent folded before I did anything more than a few little sketches.

I forgot about them. A year or two later the journalist, now working for the I. He showed them to the then editor of the Review, Richard Williams, and about a year after Richard had commissioned it the first one ran.

EP Why is his astonishing work not more visible today? Myself included. Ochs, and by a stretch of imagination The Residents and Tom Lehrer.

AH these reflected his love of dense textual lyrics, and his conviction that Pop could be intelligent informative and educational - and not necessarily at the expense of being entertaining. How many people were doing that?

PB They were great. Great comic timing. EP What was it like to have a deal with Virgin in the s? I generally like the records he recommends. I remember being knocked out when he loaned me V. I grew up in Connecticut in the 60s, passionate about Bob Dylan and British beat music.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. That period was my ideal Pop Aesthetic, I guess. It still is, in a way. Young people took prosperity for granted, so we made a show of shunning It. I think music was just a hobby for me, really. I was waiting to discover what I really wanted to do with my life.

PB Slapp Happy never registered on the radars of more than a handful of eccentrics. Maybe even Henry Cow. But not Slapp Happy. I never gave Virgin the opportunity. They treated me well. Richard was relaxed and friendly in the early days, and I liked Simon Draper a lot - very tolerant. When I re-signed with them as a solo artist in the early 80s they tried to make me a more commercial proposition, probably so that they could then rip me off , but the plot failed. I made one dreadful over-produced record for them which I regret.

But that was as much or more my fault than theirs. But were you ever tempted to go for a lush, Gary Usher-styled production values recording? But the sound we got in the early days usually felt to me like it happened more by accident than by design.

EP Can you fill me in on some factual historical points. PB We played one gig, at the I. Our second gig was in Tokyo in May of this year. PB It was the second, in fact. NB - Tm tiptoeing around the Faust story, having re-read the Mojo feature by Andy Gill on Krautrock where you have already given generously of the history of your playing with Faust.

Through David he met other underground film-makers. Uwe was and still is, I think a highly respected film critic among other things. He and Ant met, got on. Uwe was considered a taste-maker by somebody high-up in Polydor, Hamburg. They gave him the backing to set Faust up in Wumme, in a converted schoolhouse with a studio of their own.

Uwe got Anthony a deal with Polydor. I think it was after the second of these that Uwe suggested Ant. That was me. I was at University in Exeter, having an awful time. Dropped out as soon as I got the invitation to join Ant in Hamburg. He was going steady with Dagmar. The rest is silence. EP Have you any formal musical training? Slapp Happy seem so perfectly formed, as it were, without having had to grow up and make mistakes in public. What were you doing before?

How did you meet Anthony and Dagmar? PB A few piano lessons, a year or 2 of clarinet as a kid. A year of guitar lessons at 1 3. That's about it. Ant and I had a couple of bands at the school I attended in the late 60s. A vegetarian, Quaker, progressive school in Hertfordshire. Ant's parents were on the staff and lived there. PB She wrote the music. I wrote the words. EP Kew. How was it working with these free jazz masters? Did they understand what you were driving at? PB It was touch and go at first with Andrew Cyrille. He stayed up all one night trying different approaches.

The album anticipated simple interactivity diagrams on the cover were interpreted by lyrics of the songs, etc. EP Did the vocalists grasp the meaning of these lyrics? PB Of course. The vocalist being Lisa Herman, past whom very little gets. EP This, at least one example where title, sleeve art and lyrics coalesce perfectly with 18 The Sound Projector 8ighth Issue the concept.

Not that I profess to understand the concept, but its clearly a complex cipher that one can spend ages untangling - a crossword puzzle. It seems superfluous to ask if you're familiar with Alchemical books, their emblematic images replete with layers of hidden meaning which only the initiate can discover.

PB Dream on! EP The exact opposite of today's dumbed-down music consuming scene. Do you have any views - what has been lost f Why has virtually all music become ensla ved to this corporate behemoth f PB I don't think it has, really. That sense of there not being enough music has been lost, for me at least. Slapp Happy Acnalbasac Noom Original issue unknown to me.

Larcher came to film already an accomplished photographer; he shot Andy Warhol doing one of his light projections at the DOM Theatre in 1 , a spread published in Image magazine. Larcher worked then as he does now, in total isolation. His films contain multiple exposures, overprinting, shifting colour stocks, negative stocks, and brilliant use of colour achieved by deploying all of the above in combination with painting and scratching direct onto the emulsion of the film. Steve Dwoskin: 'Mare 's Tail.

It is a man's life transposed into a visual rapport. It is of the spirits and demons, which are in each of us, that unravel, as in the film, as mystical totalities through into the fragmentation of realities. He showed precisely two reels from a much longer work, whose title I wish I could remember. Two other people were in the audience.

After these two reels, Larcher quietly announced with a smile that he didn't think he would show any more that day. Just as well, perhaps - I was devastated. After seeing what I had seen, I felt sick for about a week, and looking at any other art seemed totally inadequate. These are not random escapades romping through the history of pop records; he has listened carefully to everything, found significant relationships between the sonorities and texts of his segments, and exploited these similarities to the full.

He takes pop-miniatures and creates a vast, full- colour, widescreen tableau of sound. If you give him enough time, that is. John Wall is an extremely abstemious music producer, and to me that is a very good thing. He has no desire to drown the world in recorded product, unlike not a few avant-garde bands and solo acts we could mention.

On the contrary. Wall is like the Peter Kubelka of the music world. Kubelka was an underground film-maker from Austria, prominent in the 1 s, whose complete works amounted to less than one hour of screen time. Short, perhaps; but they were perfect, concise, distilled mosaics of single-frame editing.

Kubelka knew he had 24 frames a second to communicate to his viewers, and he didn't want to waste a single one. When he made a beer commercial for TV, he used four simple short sequences of people drinking in a cafe, reprinted them In high- contrast positive and negative stock, and arranged them ruthlessly into a mathematical structure with devastating precision. The result is a one-minute masterpiece of condensed information, and an aesthetic triumph.

Wall works in a sightly similar way with samples from records, including on this disc works by composers Harrison Birtwistle, Iannis Xenakis. This distinguished French composer enjoyed a brief flurry of fame recently when two modem electro- wank jokers unexpectedly eulogised him in their interview for the UK's best-loved modern music newsstand periodical. Soon thereafter, the staff at These Records reported an unusually high level of interest from their clientele in the work of Parmegiani.

In particular, everyone wanted to secure a copy of De Natura Sonorum. I know this because I too was one of these sad buffoons - and arrived right at the end of the queue, as usual But these nuances are subtly suggested through deft strokes, not hammered home.

On the 1 track which was composed as a soundtrack to a film shown on French TV the following year , we hear expert mixing of unrelated drum tracks, rhythm guitars and organ passages, mixed together with white noise - wouldn't you love to have him remix your record!!

Through juxtaposition of lush string segments with female soprano choirs, he suggests the ghost of an Ennio Morricone soundtrack. This is unpatronising, rton-ironic and intelligent use of pop sources by someone who knows good music and good sounds when he hears them - and is sympathetic to the ideas too. Parmegiani arranged to record a work with a French quartet of free jazz players, with the only stipulation that his prepared tape-work be woven into the performance.

Their freedom was chanelled and directed - to produce this amazing work. I think there are some post- production effects too the occasional dollop of reverb that enhance the vitality of this piece. In all, another revelatory experience from this great man. How many people were doing this 20 years ago, melding free jazz and pop music with such wild electro-acoustic treatments!

Now this is what I call modern! You got that right Johnny The still-bleeding fragments are sewn together into entirely new musical works, bringing together an unlikely sounding of voices into a astonishingly innovative composition. The textures, and the surface, are gorgeous; each sound stands alone in a sharp-focus shell of high-quality recording, allowing the contrasts and juxtapositions to be examined in utter clarity.

The attention to detail is likewise extremely compelling. A few seconds of music really take wing in his hands, soaring into the stratosphere through the extra impetus he feeds into it. At least two ethical principles guide John Wall in his precise and meticulous work. One is that stealing samples of other people's music is morally wrong; this has been his guiding light right from the start of his career. At one stage he wanted to do more than namecheck the artists, and proposed to pinpoint timed, exact samples of the records he had used.

A colleague warned him of the legal repercussions, and he saw that this was not advisable! His intention is not to detract from record sales, or rip off these artists, but rather to highlight and celebrate the moments of beauty that they are capable of creating. From these shards of the genius of others, Wall uses his own genius to construct startling new works of music. The second principle is that he never short-changes his audience.

Fuelled by a passionate desire to never repeat himself. John Wall knows that musk matters - or that it should miner to us, and not simply be just another lifestyle accessory. Music should be cherished and loved, through the object of a record or CD which we can take home, put on the shelf and revisit over many years, building up a relationship with it and trying to understand its message. One incident served to focus Wall's attention on how musk is in danger of losing this meaningful connection with its audience, and perhaps even becoming rather promiscuous; it involved the editor of a well-known musk monthly lending his Mego record collection to Wall, in one breath stating how vital and important this musk was, while in the next breath appearing not to care one way or the other if he ever got the CDs back again!

Last year's release from this consortium of subversive tape-editors was themed on the idea of using samples exclusively from movies - Commercial Ad Hoc is made up of samples from adverts. Not again Only a handful of the 1 8 tracks here contain any recognisable speech at all, and only three lapse briefly into the kind of cliched, threadbare satire on Americanism that only The Tape Beatles can do so well. You've already seen it done in by Eduardo Paolozzi and in the s by Richard Hamilton, and with ten times the style and humour.

So, bend an ear to Commercial Ad Hoc and pick up on its excellent strange sounds, using them as doses of electronic medicine for your troubled mind. As with the previous release, the game these jokers are playing is an elaborate one - trying to unsettle the listener with warped variations on familiar sounds, mixed with all-out high weirdness tape experiments that are soundtracks for a night of indigestion and vkious nightmares.

The collective effort by all 18 artists, including such names as Pimmon, Spacklequeen, Mr Mcrtdies, Office Products, Orange Head, Experts of Legitimization and The Bran Flakes - is simply to persuade you that all is not right with the world. Sure, they'll hook you in with a familiar sound - a frequently heard sample here is the one on computer TV commercials which promises 'Intel Inside! The listener may be beguiled or repulsed; but either way, anarchk actions and reactions are sure to follow.

You may sleep late one day. Six months after playing the CD, you'll be out of a job and sleeping on the streets, but at least your mind will be free. Like People Like Us, the guys at Seeland Records home to Negativland, the spiritual forefathers of this record believe that if you want to defeat the enemy, you have to sing his song. Their skills in creating the product - each track here is a mini- masterpiece of narrative, deft tape-cutting and condensed information, mostly in the three minute range, like pop songs - easily rival those of the swish boys on Madison Avenue who spend millions of dollars on product placement and manipulating your mind into accepting that Brand X is in some vague undescribed way going to enhance your miserable lifestyle.

Perhaps then the invidious and subtle methods of a Seeland record are one counter-method to defeat this blatancy. The artists are probably already preaching to the converted, otherwise I wouldn't be writing about this record in The Sound Projector and you wouldn't be reading it. But maybe there is hope. Seeland Records have next to zero visibility in the marketplace, and the packaging of this one is so deliberately low key as to be non-existent. The messages on this record will not reach a mass audience, nor would it be understood by them if it succeeded.

Instead, they seep out into the world like poison gas, passing on by word of mouth, changing the world by stealth, silently. After some false starts. Into an eye of a camera obscura, looking at the present, backwards, upside-down; all things fall out of the box of memories.

Take me gently to the river and drown me, in the sea of wishes. It brings to mind a private idyll, sensual colour overload - dust hangs in the air acting like a prism. A door swings open. Retrospective like looking at someone's record collection, while they're out of the room making coffee.

I don't, know what to make of this, their I st LP. One to have. The cover art shows our heroine Jane rendered as a line drawing, her eye pierced with metal pins, making her into a tortured Virgin Mary figure. It's just nice sounds. The loop trick is an ancient one, but it does work well here and is done with a sense of humour, without sneering at the cheesiness of its chosen source.

Holger Czukay woulda lived it! The other side contains three pieces of more ordinary electronic japery made at the Klangkricg studios in Germany. It would be wrong to narrow down the focus of PLU's project, but an ongoing war against the media would seem to be a significant part of it. We poor slobs, disenfranchised and alienated, are certainly in need of effective weapons against the media - and here I am not talking about battling the faceless corporation moguls that supposedly govern our lives.

The weapons we need are sardonic humour, and fighting like with like; PLU uses the very absurdity of the media against itself. Television is just plain insulting most of the time - an insult to taste and intelligence. And I am extremely suspect of the conditioned responses that are now ingrained into our daily lives - commonplace banalities, in our thoughts, words and deeds, arc now almost automatic. Records like those by PLU cannot solve the problem - if there is a problem - but they can at least make us aware of the situation.

Through extremely skilled tape editing, PLU is constantly calling attention to the spoken word - and on at least three excellent examples here, scrambles and rearranges some radio phone-in shows into a hilarious garbled morality play, to make a savage mockery of everything that decent society holds dear. The first example, an episode with an 89 year-old woman appears to be little more than a simple object-lesson in how the radio presenters patronise us, cut us off, distort our meaning, and control us.

By the time we get to the Millennium Dome caller, the rug is pulled out from under us yet again, as both caller and presenter are made to look equally ridiculous. The confused dippy lady caller phoning in for completely the wrong reason, and acting cagey when questioned; the condescending male host trying to regain control of the situation, and through tape edits repeating his mundanities into oblivion. Whose side are we on? We're never quite sure - and that is the whole point.

There are records here that, if heard in their entirety, would probably induce a slow death by cringing - thank heavens someone is prepared to listen to them for us! You can relish the trademark economy and deftness with which PLU assembles the samples, making simple incongruous links between dopey love songs and unexpected sound effects.

Plus, the continual interruption of one's entertainment; as soon as you start falling asleep, or make the mistake of getting into the groove of a particularly naff and cheesy disco tune, PLU are right there with a jarring edit or a sudden full stop - a baseball bat to the frontal lobe a quick and simple means of waking up the inattentive listener, and used by Frank Zappa to great effect on his early records.

PLU delights in undermining our expectations; in a cruel but effective cut, a mewling kitten is set on fire during a phone call in a domestic setting, making soft imagery violent and strange. Most impressive of all though is how the voice of the artist still shines through, in spite of all the sources being second-hand; PLU records have their own distinctive identity, immediately recognisable, and create a unique sound- world that is as welcoming and friendly as any record by your favourite performer.

The Thermos imagery of the title can't be accidental. The Thermos flask, along with the hot water bottle and the suet pudding, is a perfect symbol of Great British Dreariness - unfailingly present at gloomy seaside resorts, rainy picnics and lurking in the lunch-boxes of the repressed civil servants who haunt Mlllbank.

To ram home the image of the Thermos, there's a black and white gatefold photo inserted in the package, showing an early promotional Thermos-shaped van surrounded by gawping idiots. And, just as the Thermos flask keeps liquid hot or cold, so this record blows hot and blows cold with the listener, contrasting the heat of a good belly-laugh with chilling visions of absurd bleakness - often within the same moment. Few artists can bring this off successfully.

Let's cherish People Like Us. If you're of a like mind, then you've come to the right place. In the interests of elucidation, we follow on from last issue's explorations and have sought out further examples of VSNM' to stimulate the enquiring mind.

Obfvion is not only becoming more of an attractive proposition, it's sadly becoming the only option there is. Let me confess I am easily prone to see through the joys of life, becoming acutely aware of the holowness of everything. This summer in the UK, for example, has boasted some of the worst ever weather we have been forced to endure; and nothing casts a pall over this gloomy country than the sick, anaemic ight that passes for sunlight. When faced with a few hours in a dismal North-Eastern seaside resort with a friend this summer, I could feel the disease of my spirit creeping upon me yet again.

I sometimes think I've passed beyond mere existentialism into some even more unbearable condition, and there seems little hope of relief from this miserable psychological state. I turn to these minimal records with relief; sometimes these are the only things I can bear to isten to! Neither existentialist nor depressing, the minimal music and silence on these discs is inspiring, filled with richness of life and great possibilities for development.

Find a space within them and you can make it your home forever. Not everything here reaches the supreme heights of utter nothingness that we managed last issue, but some of them are related to one cnother; bear with us and the jigsaw pieces will fall Into ptoce. Reading a book, listening to a piece of music, looking at a painting. How often do we all suppose we've done chat properly, for a start? One DIM, apparently, lasts for three of our 'normal' seconds.

I have a great deal of time for this very important and wonderful artist. He's often called an ultra-minimalist, but having pondered this matter for all of twenty DIMs, I'm hard pushed to find any serious resemblance between the austere, soothing and meditative work of GUnter's and the large-scale serial bombast of American Minimalism.

This point is hardly worth labouring, since no composer wants to be labelled anything full stop, but it seems that European GUnter is of a different generation and most likely working within a different tradition. Those from the New York school are better at it than others. GUnter, by contrast, seems wispy, ethereal, self-effacing - and the epitaph to his work is not 'I am great and my magnificent work will live forever as a monument to the great Me, and my greatness'.

He's coming towards music from a different angle, and though he is a composer, he isn't one that works with printed scores and pieces of paper as La Monte Young did, and continues to do - maybe because he knows that pieces of paper, in the right context and with the right gallery agent, are worth potloads of money! GUnter works with the modem tools, the studio and the tape recorder - or hard-disk editor as it probably is now. The works can only exist as recordings. The work of GUnter and his allies Is, perhaps, one natural development of musique concrete, only using fewer sources and Gent A: Have you read this one?

Gent B: Well, I've picked it up GUnter, alas and alack for us superficial types who would prefer to skim through life without letting anything really touch us, demands no quarter. He wants us to become really involved. To return to the point, he's fascinated the way that time can slip away when we are really absorbed in a great artwork, and he reports that listeners to his own ultra-minimal compositions don't have a very reliable perception of how long they last In particular, the short ones 'appear' to have lasted much longer.

I think similar reactions have been noted, in connection with the sublime musk of Morton Feldman. GUnter then takes a remarkable leap of nuttiness, by casually mentioning his 24 The Sound Projector 8ighth Issue treating them in far more subtle and imaginative ways. I might go one further and say that Gunter is even truer to his sources than the pioneers of the 1 s, as he allows them more time to unfold inH to sp.

W rm the ideas and visions which were already in the head of the viewer. So, you might say I could pick up virtually any object wrapped in silver paper like the Maze CD here and in my own mind, turn it into a little talisman.

Perhaps I could, but then the magic mirrors never spoke back. And neither did the chocolate, as it disappeared into my insatiable maw. My favourite memories are of distant, muffled bumping sounds - as though someone were moving furniture around inside my brain. It is seen that the QTrick Bits are able to implement the teleportation with a remarkable degree of accuracy. Nonlinear characterization of the entangled states reveal the presence of chaos, thus providing subtle hints towards understanding the QTrick signal behavior.

The extreme simplicity of the proposed design coupled with its efficacy in implementing quantum teleportation accurately form the highlights of the present work. The fluctuations accompanying the DC offset in a photovoltaic cell open circuit voltage waveform are studied. Nonlinear analyses performed on these waveforms ascertain the presence of a highly unstable chaotic behavior.

The results are validated using various parameters such as Kolmogorov Entropy, Fractal Dimension and Lyapunov Exponent. It is observed that the chaotic behavior responds to atmospheric and cosmic disturbances and hence can be used to study such effects. The information and inferences about the chaotic behavior coupled with proper synchronization techniques could potentially lead to cost effective means of enhancing the solar cell output.

Efficient techniques of Genome Data handling and storage are the need of the hour in the present genetic engineering era. The present work purports to the design and implementation of a Genome Sequence Data Compression Technique without the use of references and lookup. This is achieved by first generating a digital chaotic bit stream, formed by performing XOR operations on three square waves with mismatched frequencies.

The generated bit stream is XORed with the Genome Sequence bit stream after necessary data conditioning, and the result is stored as a 2D array image. The png format is chosen, owing to its inherent lossless properties. It is seen that the perfectly reversible operations of compression and decompression result in compression ratios of around 2.

The use of digital chaos provides an additional layer of security, since the frequencies of the input square wave signals form a secure key, which when mismatched during decompression even by 1 percent, can result in error rates of upto 60 percent.

A novel kind of chaos dependent on frequency and offering the twin advantages of easy tunability and simplicity of implementation is proposed, using which, a simple methodology to generate a chaotic signal is designed and implemented in hardware using FPGA, and the generated chaos is characterized using standard parameters such as Lyapunov Exponents and Kolmogorov Entropy. This temporal signal is used as the basis acting on a spatial propagation rule to generate spatiotemporal patterns.

The generated patterns and their dependence on the spatial and temporal rules are studied. The distinguishing features of the obtained spatiotemporal patterns are simplicity of implementation, richness of features observed and a temporal rather than a spatial basis for generation, leading to implementation without employing memory consuming neighbourhood rules, which form the highlights of the present work.

The generation of spatiotemporal patterns is seen as a road to tunable evolution and emergence, and finds immense applications such as bar code and random number generators. In this light, the present work explores a signal-oriented perspective of solitons, where it is seen that the impulse responses of semiconductor devices such as PN-diodes and MOSFETs are obtained as solitons.

Consequently, a simple circuit involving a single MOS inverter to generate a train of solitons from a sinusoidal input is proposed, designed and implemented in both TCAD Virtual Fabrication and Hardware levels. Following this, the free space optic transmissions of solitons are compared with square and sine wave signals, and it is seen that solitons are able to propagate longer distances with lesser attenuation values.

Finally, a soliton free space optic AM communication system is designed and demonstrated in hardware level. The extreme simplicity of the soliton generator circuit owing to its ubiquity, coupled with the longer ranges and lower attenuation values obtained for soliton free space optic transmission forms the novelty of the present work, ultimately leading to next-gen applications such as LiFi.

In this research monograph, the author has presented a novel scheme to find the Sequence Of Primes of Second 2nd Order Space. Linear programming is now included in algorithm undergraduate and postgraduate courses for computer science majors. A new Theory is proposed which explains all the observed phenomenon of the sun including explanations of all the above mentioned shortcomings of the old fusion model and fits all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together of the workings of sun using our current understanding of the forces of electromagnetism. This theory provides a direct rational explanation of all observed phenomenon of the sun without resorting to any vague assumptions Category: Astrophysics. A novel kind of iterative map, the frequency dependent map, offering the crucial advantages of easy tunability and signal dependent control is formulated from the standard circle map, and is studied using the bifurcation and cobweb plots.

Following this, the nonlinearity of a MOSFET is explored and a novel modification to a conventional ring oscillator is proposed by adding a potential divider in its feedback path, achieving adaptive bias control. It is seen that such a design gives outputs most closely resembling hyperbolic secant based solitons.

The operation of various contemporary communication systems such as WiMax in the Microwave X-Band, coupled with the information explosion in recent times has enforced a high pressure in the capacity and security handling aspects, where it would be convenient to provide these facilities at the physical level itself. The present work proposed a radically new solution to this issue, by developing a Secure Solitary Wavelet.

Specifically, a Gunn Oscillator Microwave source is fed to a microwave transistor, and by using a slave low frequency signal, the nature of the output is tuned and the envelope is observed to be chaotic, and is characterized using Kolmogorov Entropy and Lyapunov Exponents. This envelope is modulated onto a hyperbolic secant function to create a Secure Solitary Wavelet.

It is seen that the solitary nature induces extreme compactness and smoothness as seen by the vanishing higher moments, while the chaotic envelope is controlled by the slave frequency acting as a key and providing a layer of security to the wavelet. The extreme simplicity of the proposed design coupled with the compactness and security of the Secure Solitary Wavelet form the highlights of the present work.

The present work pertains to the generation of a chaotic signal by taking the inverse Fourier Transform of a Fractal Spectral Profile. The presence of chaos is ascertained and characterized using phase portraits, recurrence plots, Lyapunov exponents and Kolmogorov entropies. This results in the proposed Fractal Chaotic Solitary Wavelets having potential applications in secure communications and encryption. Chaotic signals serve as ideal candidates as carriers in secure communication systems.

The proposed design is implemented using Field Programmable Gate Array and nonlinear characterization using Lyapunov exponent confirms the presence of chaos. A proof-of-concept communication system is then numerically designed and evaluated using the Mean Square Error, which reveals the sensitivity of the system to perfect decryption.

The simplicity of the design, coupled with the high level of security obtained form the highlights of the present work. The present work pertains to the exploration of signal based chaos generation in the Microwave X-Band frequency range. Specifically, two reflex klystrons are used as sources to two ports of the magic tee, while a third port is terminated.

By taking the output from the fourth port, the envelope waveforms and phase portraits are seen to exhibit reasonable degree of richness and complexity. The presence of chaos is quantitatively ascertained using Lyapunov Exponents and Kolmogorov Entropies. The results outlined in the present work offer a far simpler alternative to generate easy-to-tune signal dependent chaos, suitable for telecommunication applications.

The progressive miniaturization seen in the current era of nanoelectronics poses the significant problem of signal distortion. Taking cue from the concept of solitons introduced in recent times in optical and electronic domains, the present work proposed a new perspective on the design of a Solitary Pulse Generator Circuit.

The key elements here are Ring Oscillators consisting of CMOS inverters, in whose feedback path a potential divider circuit is inserted. The output is characterized using waveforms and spectra, and a decent match with conventional hyperbolic secant based solitary pulses is observed. The effect of supply voltage on frequency and power dissipation, and the effect of number of stages are also studied.

The simplicity of the proposed design in comparison with conventional soliton oscillators, coupled with low values of power dissipation and consistent frequency of operation form the significant highlights of the present work. In this work, we explore the nonlinearities arising due to processes and geometry in a 32nm CMOS technology to generate dissipative solitons with extremely simple circuitry. Finally the generated dissipative solitons are used as carriers in a prototype communication system. The dissipative solitons generated enable state-of-the-art CMOS technologies to relish some of the successes enjoyed by ultrafast nonlinear optical technology.

A Radio-over fiber communication system operating at Terahertz frequency is designed, considering the underlying physics of nanoelectronic and nanophotonic devices, and performance of non-conventional soliton based carriers is evaluated, accounting for novelty of this work.

Radio over Fiber refers to a technology whereby light is modulated by a radio signal and transmitted over an optical fiber link to facilitate wireless access. The present work purports to the modeling of radio over fiber systems in the MATLAB environment on employing specially designed photonic crystal fibers, consisting of subwavelength-core dielectric photonic nanowires embedded in their cladding, as optical channels between the main central station and the set of base stations and silicon photonic based electro-optic modulators.

Data transmission at terahertz frequencies using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing schemes with cyclic error control coding along with digital modulation schemes such as amplitude shift keying and binary phase shift keying have been implemented. Different carrier signals such as solitons, similaritons, square, and sine waves are considered.

In simulating the radio over fiber system, three different media are considered. In the first stage of signal propagation, photonic crystal fibers embedded with photonic nanowires in their cladding are considered and signal propagation through them is numerically modeled using the predictor-corrector symmetrized split step Fourier method. In the second stage, electrical transmission lines that are modeled as microstrips using S-parameters are considered. In the last stage of signal propagation, wireless channel modeled using additive white Gaussian noise and multipath fading, is considered.

The performance of the aforementioned communication system is reviewed using standard metrics such as bit error rate and eye diagrams. It is shown that solitons are more robust carriers for terahertz communications compared to the other carriers and that it is possible to achieve a relatively distortion free communication system even amidst the worst possible SNR levels.

Ramanathan Comments: 4 Pages. Conventional communication systems use either sinusoids pass band or square waves baseband as carriers. However tradeoffs have to be made with regards to bandwidth, fidelity, power consumption and system complexity. This paper explores using Non-conventional waveforms including Gaussian like pulses as carrier waveforms using a 4-user OFDMA system as the benchmark.

The performance of the various carrier waveforms are assessed by using standard metrics such as Bit Error Rate, Signal to Noise ratio and eye-diagram. The results presented in this work give valuable insights into Non-conventional carrier waveforms and their impact on SNR and BER leading to more robust. The performance of Soliton carriers are compared with sinusoidal counterparts using eye diagrams.

The low distortion values observed for solitons form the novelty of the present work. The basic components for most secure computing and communication systems of today are random number generators. The present work purports to a radically novel approach to the design and implementation of random number generators.

Firstly, a nonlinear analysis of the photovoltaic cell open circuit voltage is performed, and the presence of chaos is ascertained using standard measures such as Lyapunov Exponents. Following this, the chaotic output is adapted into a bit stream and randomness tests from the NIST Suite are performed.

It is seen that the chaotic output indeed passes all the randomness tests. The histogram of the output reveals similarities with Gaussian Normal Distributions, confirming the stochastic nature. Thus, the photovoltaic cell output is a potential power generating random number generator, drastically differing from the conventional power dissipative random number generators. One of the most successful theories of modern physics, quantum mechanics has undergone rigorous testing and validation, one of the primary motives being fanciful and informative applications of quantum information theory such as teleportation and superdense coding.

Over the years, many explanations have been given for the mechanism and interpretation of the various quirks and mysteries of quantum mechanics, the latest entrant being a suggestion of nonlinearity and chaos underlying quantum mechanics. Finally, the chaos-qubit formulation is validated using a real time application — quantum teleportation.

The ability to successfully demonstrate the teleportation of a single qubit numerically suggests that the chaotic interpretation of quantum mechanics has some validity. Furthermore, it ushers in the era of low cost, high capacity, high security information systems using nonlinear electrical circuits.

Self-heating is an undesirable phenomenon, causing intermodulation distortion in RF frequencies. The theories pertinent to passive electrothermal theory are studied, and the phenomenon giving rise to self-heating is represented as an RC equivalent circuit. After validation of the model with established experimental observations, the model is applied to various microwave transmission line configurations coplanar and microstrip considering various material configurations.

After extracting certain useful inferences, the model is applied to smart materials such as Titanium Dioxide. In this paper design of low loss passive planar low pass filter for reducing harmonics in a frequently used voltage source type nonlinear load in low voltage distribution system is proposed. The filter is comprised of a lumped high impedance line inductor made of fused silica and an interdigitated capacitor that is made of La0. An extensive simulation of single phase diode bridge rectifier with designed filter is carried out by employing Spice software.

The subsequent analyses reveal very low insertion loss for the proposed filter. Furthermore, low total harmonic distortion values conforming to IEEE standards and 3dB cut-off in the range of 75Hz, are obtained. This enables the designed low pass filter to effectively eliminate higher order harmonics over the entire wide band in single stretch.

The usage of fractal based capacitor structure with giant K resulting in large capacitance value of the order of 3mF, small size, and the effective harnessing of temperature dependent resistance in the inductor leading to stable cut-off frequency even amidst dynamic load variation form the crux of the present work. The nonlinear analysis of the transient response of a Gallium Oxide thin film based ammonia detector is performed using standard techniques such as Wavelet Analysis and Lyapunov Exponents, all of these targeted towards the resistance transient response as a function of ammonia concentration in ppm.

While the distance plots reveal maximum asymmetry in the vicinity of 5ppm, positive Lyapunov Exponents obtained confirm the presence of chaos, while exhibiting a very prominent peak at 5ppm concentration levels. It is opined that the results of nonlinear analysis presented in this work will serve as a stepping stone in the systematic benchmarking of various sensing mechanisms taking into account the nonlinearity in the underlying mechanisms.

Category: Chemistry. The present work proposes designs and implements a novel microwave based material characterization technique. By connecting a klystron based microwave source to a transmitter antenna, a turn table rotates the sample to be characterized, placed in the radiation field of the antenna, by degrees. A receiver antenna then collects the scattered radiation, and the distribution of intensity for various angles is recorded using power meter. The techniques are validated for nanostructured samples of Titanium Oxide as well as Zinc Oxide based thin films.

It is hoped that these preliminary results will lay the foundation steps towards microwave based material characterization, with the significant advantage of lesser health hazard compared with X-Ray based techniques. In the present work, the solitary chirplet, formed by modulating a frequency modulated signal with a hyperbolic secant envelope is formulated.

It is seen that this solitary chirplet possesses a high number of vanishing moments. Sample analysis of sinusoidal and FM signals using the solitart chirplet confirms its efficacy in detecting frequency changes and discontinuities, following which the analysis of an earthquake signal is presented. It is seen that the proposed solitary chirplets come in handy while analyzing frequency variations and breaks in signals.

A two-dimensional photonic crystal based on a lattice of silicon rods in air with a photonic bandgap in the visible and near-ultraviolet spectra is proposed, by removing some of the silicon rods or resizing their radius, to create a monotonically varying tapered line defect, thereby pertaining to a case of structure-based nonlinearity and making it possible to operate with low input powers. For certain modes of operation, field confinement is observed, and this leads to the formation of discrete pulses, or light bullets.

Such a structure can be used as a multi-functional device, with some of the functionalities being optical non-pumped amplification, frequency upconversion, memory writing, matched termination and slow wave guiding, that form the major conclusions of the work. A simplified photonic crystal design for an all-optical NAND gate operating in the visible spectrum is proposed and validated with numerical experiments using Finite Difference Time Domain method.

Considering the NAND gate as a optical four-port network, the scattering matrix is determined. Also, two-dimensional autocorrelation-based leakage analysis is done and temporal analysis of the output pulse is performed. From the above mentioned valuations, one can obtain the optimal performance of the NAND gate structure with minimal loss and distortion, which forms the novelty of the present work.

A detailed analysis yields optimal linear and nonlinear performance of the optical amplifier operating in the visible region with minimal leakage and distortion. An all-optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Communication system at 2 THz is modelled using photonic crystal fiber of length 1km, and the performance of four carrier waveforms - hyperbolic secant, square of hyperbolic secant, square and sinusoidal is evaluated using standard metrics such as eye diagram and bit error rate.

From the above mentioned valuations, one can deduce the minimal distortion in hyperbolic secant based carriers, hence leading to unconventional carrier waveforms, which forms the novelty of the present work. As we move steadily into the world of compact and ultrafast devices, there is a steady increase in demand for high speed devices and gadgets.

Here, photonics comes handy and even more with the advent of Silicon Photonics, which enables photonics and electronics to be integrated into the same chip. These techniques would be potential contenders in revolutionizing the world of Telecommunication and signal processing, effectively replacing electronics with photonics, which would result in extremely fast devices and reduced thermal effects.

We investigate some properties of unconditional convergence of series taking values in lattice groups. We give some matrix and Schur-type theorems in the filter convergence context for lattice group-valued measures, and deduce an interchange theorem for series. The 5th version of viXra This theory is perfectly matched with the current experimental data, and surprisedly, we find that the existing neutrino oscillation exper- imental data is the first experimental evidence supporting one kind of high dimensional unified theories, such as M-theory.

Besides, an interesting approach to construct lep- ton mass matrices in fractal universe under permutation symmetry is also discussed. This theory opens an unexpected window on the physics beyond the Standard Model. Authors: Glenn A.

Baxter Comments: Five pages. The unnecessary confusion about Dr. As indicated in the seminal work of reformer physicist G. Fekete all natural constants can be derived at least to eight digit accuracy. In this work we show that his model can in fact be understood by membrane lattices in string theory. More specifically fibred non-trivial conformal algebraic varieties sequenced of super-Hirzebruch curves that approximate Maxwell-Enriques surfaces.

We propose the structure of the Fekete matrix to be parametrised by all possible toric condensates. Thus the only physical sense to understand the Fekete model is through radiative fluxes in superstring theory. Thirring and Feynman showed that the Einstein equation is simply a partial differential classical field equation, akin to Maxwell's equation, but it and its solutions are required to conform to the GR principles of general covariance and equivalence.

It is noted, with examples, that solutions of such equations can contravene required physical principles when they exhibit unphysical boundary conditions. Using the crucially important tensor contraction theorem together with the equivalence principle, it is shown that metric tensors are physical only where all their components, and also those of their inverse matrix, are finite real numbers, and their signature is that of the Minkowski metric.

Thus the "horizons" of the empty-space Schwarzschild solution metrics are unphysical, which is traced to the boundary condition that arises from the minimum energetically-allowed radius of a positive effective mass.

It is also noted that "comoving" ostensible "coordinate systems" disrupt physical boundary conditions in time via their artificial "composite time" which can't be registered by the clock of any observer because it is "defined" by the clocks of an infinite number of observers. Spurious singularities ensue in such unphysical "coordinates", which fall away on transformation of metric solutions to non-"comoving coordinates".

A solitary wavelet, based on the hyperbolic secant function is proposed, characterized and applied to real-time data. Numerical analysis of the solitary wavelet reveals that it has a huge number of vanishing higher order moments, tending rapidly towards zero with a negative logarithmic slope.

It is seen that the wavelet has a very low number of oscillatory sub-lobes, thus making it the ideal candidate to perform signal analysis of burst-type phenomena without undergoing multiple levels of filtering and approximation, and this concept is illustrated by effectively detecting the QRS complex of an ECG cycle without undergoing multiple filtering levels. The ability of the proposed wavelet to perform analysis of a diverse variety of real time data without multiple levels of decomposition and reconstruction forms the novelty of the present work.

One of the most prominent candidates is music, an enjoyable healthcare approach. The present article formulates a music based integrative medicine system. The formulation created in this article thus opens the doors for reliable, enjoyable, holistic healthcare with minimal side effects using music.

The growing concerns about pro-oxidant nature and toxicity during interaction of flavonoids such as chrysin and associated metal complexes with the cell membrane has led to investigations on membrane perturbations by the same. However, the Cyclic Voltammetry CV results show signs indicative of a hysteesis behavior. Taking cue from this, the present work is directed at a nonlinear analysis and characterization of the CV results of membrane perturbations by Chrysin and its copper and iron complexes.

Plots of the Voltage-Resistance V-R and Voltage-Capacitance V-C relations show that while the capacitance is constant independent of voltage, the V-R behavior shows an interesting Hysteresis pattern with negative resistance peaks being seen. Presence of dosage-independent chaos is ascertained using the Lyapunov Exponent. The present work offers an insight into the nonlinear behavior underlying the mechanics of flavonoid-cell membrane interaction and might be the first step in a series of studies focused on the role of nonlinearity and chaos on toxicity.

Category: Biochemistry. This observation logically raises the question of whether the masses of nucleotides in particular, contribute to the well-known high informational efficiency and capacity of the DNA. In this context, the present work purports to a simple experiment, where the genome sequences of three virus species are used to derive a sequence of the corresponding nucleotide molar masses.

Along with the original nucleotide-molar mass associations, three fictitious associations are proposed, and for each of the four associations, the histograms of molar mass occurrences are plotted. It is seen that the original association alone leads to a distribution resembling the normal probability distribution, leading to the hypothesis that this preference affects choice of molar mass by nature, which then results in the efficiency of the solitonic transmissions and thus ultimately, the observed informational efficiency of the genetic codes.

The strange and often counter-intuitive aspects of quantum mechanics such as collapse and entanglement have led to a series of interpretations of the reality expressed by the discipline. The present work purports to the formulation and postulation of a new interpretation of quantum mechanics, one that stems from the principles of chaos theory.

Specifically, the superposed state in a quantum system is viewed as an equivalent of a chaotic signal, whose collapse is decided procedurally by the initial conditions and timing-wise by the process of measurement. The basic postulates of quantum mechanics and a glimpse of entanglement is viewed in this perspective.

Following this, the proposed chaotic interpretation is compared with other standard interpretations in light of various properties such as determinism, locality, realism, counterfactual definiteness, and hidden variables. The novel perspective of quantum mechanics fundamentals through chaos theory, where the latter has undergone significant progress in terms of studying the system ehaviour using standard tools and evolutionary patterns, offers a plethora of interesting and exciting options to study the hidden realities of nature.

The search for an all comprehensive Theory of Everything unifying the four fundamental forces described by Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity has always been an elusive one. Among the plethora of theories including Superstring Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity proposed in recent years, the present article focuses on the E8 Theory of Everything.

A Chaos Theory based interpretation of Quantum Mechanics is then proposed, to represent the 3 qubits as three chaotic signals. The physical interpretation of this theory is explored along with particle creation and particle interaction formulations. While the validation of the E8 Theory await experimental evidence, the principles of metahomeomorphism, quantum computation and subsequently the CQIE8ToE ensure that any representation of a unified theory in a Lie Group based on a charge space yields to the elegant merging of Relativity, Quantum Physics, Particle Physics and Chaos Theory, into a simple yet effective World-View.

Following this, the phenomenon of entanglement using S-bits is discussed, followed by implementations of quantum teleportation and superdense coding. The results reveal the effective reproduction of quantum computation applications using simple circuitry involving the S-Bit analogue, thus ushering in the golden era of affordable quantum computing.

Radio astronomy plays a crucial role in revealing vital information about the early universe and celestial structures. A novel nonlinear analysis technique using the polar and phase plane plots for analyzing radio astronomical data is proposed, and the analysis for a pulsar B is performed. The present work explores a radically new perspective exploiting the advantages of quantum computation using classical systems. Following this, a brief overview of the concept of cellular automata and associated rules is presented.

The extreme simplicity of the proposed design coupled with its efficacy in implementing rich patterns using cellular automata concepts form the highlights of the present work. Rogue Waves are highly unstable waves extremely localized in space and time, appearing from nowhere and disappearing without leaving a trace. The observation of such waves in oceanography has led to increased interest in the physics community where optical rogue waves generated using microstructured fibers are studied for their interactions and the underlying physical phenomena.

In the present article, an extremely simple rogue wave generator is proposed, where a hyperbolic secant based temporal profile evolves according to a hyperbolic secant square spatial profile. The derivative of this spatial profile gives the spatial evolution equation, and this is implemented using FPGA.

It is seen that a single rogue wave exponentially rising to its peak amplitude at mid time instant and then quickly decaying is formed. The extremely simple signal-oriented design of rogue wave generator, effectively capturing the spatial and temporal propagation properties of such rogue waves, coupled with the potential applications it enables using the generated electrical rogue waves forms the novelty of the present work.

Behavioral Economics, which essentially studies psychology, cognition and emotion in the context of economics, has proved that economics in the real world is not always with mathematical accuracy, predictability and clockwork precision. Consequently, such a listing can be quantified using matrices and appropriate weights, thus bringing Behavioral Economics a step closer to becoming a quantifiable, deterministic study.

The current era of Information Technology has enabled one to access a wealth of information regarding public opinion and market trends through web search behaviour exploring tools such as Google Trends. The results provide valuable insights into group trends such as the rise, saturation and decline in the interests of such services and their dependence on various factors such as internet connection speeds and penetration rates, while also exploring exceptional cases and other individual aspects of social networking trends.

While from a managerial perspective, such results can be used to assess market trends and demands, the inferences also provide useful information to administrators and governments, as well as the common man to understand the current trends and plan investments of time and money accordingly.

The presence of sensitivity, or chaotic behavior is seen and studied using phase portraits, maximal Lyapunov Exponents and Distance Plots. A simple circuit to generate chaos is proposed, with the central principle being the coupling of two sinusoidal signals with mismatched frequencies to two terminals of an NMOS transistor. Standard chaotic characterization performed using Kolmogorov Entropy and Lyapunov exponents reveal that the output is a frequency controlled chaos.

By coupling this output with another sinusoidal input to a second NMOS transistor, a clear segregation of frequencies is observed, analogous to the chirping phenomenon seen typically in optical systems. The nature of chirping is investigated using phase portraits, Lyapunov Exponents and distance maps. The extreme simplicity of the proposed circuit coupled with the new phenomenon of chirping being observed as a result of frequency controlled chaos form the main highlights of the present work.

A Chaos based compression technique offering high capacity and high security simultaneously is designed and implemented. A chaotic image, obtained by reshaping the signal representing a frequency dependant driven chaotic system is used as the data carrier in which data from the file to be compressed is embedded.

Implementation of the algorithm is carried out in MATLAB and Python platforms for various filetypes such as txt, png, pdf, mp3, 3gp and rar formats. A comparative performance analysis reveals a high fidelity with a mean square errors of less than 0. A very high level of security leading to up to 60 percent of mean square error values even for 1 percent misalignment in the decryption process is observed.

The execution times for the implementations are obtained reasonably at around 5 seconds. The spectral lines given off by Hydrogen are well known and is simply described by the Rydberg formula. However, this only works on the hydrogen atom.

If we try to describe the spectra with the Rydberg formula for helium and lithium, it fails — or does it? This a paper explores the idea that the spectra of heavier elements like helium and lithium can actually be described by just providing scaling factors to the Rydberg formula to explain the spectra given off by multi-electron atoms. This shows that the spectra is not a complex multi-body problem and that there is a very simple stair case pattern that the spectra follows. Authors: Nikitin V.

Time Perspective Bias TPB postulates that time is actually observed and measured with a perspective, analogous to 2D linear perspective in architecture.

Quantum scale time intervals, as measured, appear magnified and diverging. Resulting pluralism in time and space is proposed to be simply an illusion of skewed perspective. TPB predicts that altering the scales , between the observer and the particle detectors will result in a variation of the "wave function collapse", proportionately. In TPB, corrections of skewed time intervals are first converted to true length. Subsequently, all classical and relative physics t' are then calculated.

TPB also provides a simple alternative explanation for: accelerated expansion, the "galaxy outer rim rotation problem", millisecond pulsars and the "double slit experiment". Authors: E. In this paper I present a baryon intrinsic Dark Matter halo model. The model gives a correct first order galactic rotation curve, leads to the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation and to the MOND force for the weak acceleration regime.

The entropy connected to the intrinsic Dark Matter halo allows the derivation of the Dark Matter force, the deviation from Newton, as an entropic force. The definition of the entropy leads to a new parameter, of dimensional degrees of freedom, added to MOND. This new parameter solves the galaxy cluster mass discrepancy problem of MOND and produces and exact relationship between the MOND acceleration and the Hubble acceleration, with cosmological implications.

The realization that MOND is a theory based on Helmholtz work shifts the question regarding its relativistic formulation towards the larger problem of a relativistic formulation of thermodynamics, a highly discussed and accepted problem in physics. It touches upon the arrow of time issue. To this end, the present work purports to the proposal and implementation nonlinear analysis of such radio astronomical data, using qualitative techniques such as time series, spectrum, bispectrum, phase portrait, Poincare section, polar plot, spatiotemporal analysis, wavelet analysis and distance plots, as well as quantitative analysis techniques including the Lyapunov exponent, Kolmogorov entropy and fractal dimension.

The analysis techniques and results presented here, coupled with theory backed rigorous investigations into the astronomical mechanisms may serve as a valuable tool for unlocking the secrets of the universe.

An all-optical Supercontinuum based communication system at 2 THz is modeled using photonic crystal fiber of length 1km, and its performance using digital modulation techniques such as Amplitude Shift Keying ASK is evaluated using standard metrics such as eye diagram and bit error rate.

The present paper pertains to the formulation and generation of a signal based frequency controlled chaos based on the Heart Curves, an assortment of parametric functions so named due to their ability to generate cardoid heart-shaped curves.

Specifically, the variable in two parametric functions is taken as an additively coupled sum of sinusoids with competing frequencies. By adapting the x and y components of these functions into signals, the time derivatives are computed and used to form the iterative maps and phase portraits. Using these, bifurcation diagrams are plotted in order to investigate the chaotic behavior.

Authors: Jacques Consiglio Comments: 55 Pages. Here we show that free parameters are inexistent in physics; their values are geometrical. This result originates in a resonance concept in absorber theory. The conceptual leap is that we do consider energy in all forms as a composite resonance process involving only currents. We first address the mass and coupling parameters of the standard model of particles physics, deduce their origin, their form, and the valid resonances from group theory arguments and geometry; then we show the coherence of the mass spectrum with the predictions and we compute the fine structure constant from geometry and SU 2.

Next we show how gravitation comes from the absorber and we end-up with a complete reversal in concepts; we find that the origin of energy and gravitation is linear cosmos expansion. The link with quantum physics is rather trivial and it first shows that the wave is momentum. The resulting gravitational force gives an acceleration H c at galaxies borders but not in the solar system; it is compatible with the absence of dark matter.

Authors: Carlos Castro Comments: 17 Pages. Accelerated strings in tangent bundle backgrounds are studied in further detail than it has been done in the past. The worldsheet associated with the accelerated open string described in this work envisages a continuum family of worldlines of accelerated points. It is the presence of this null horizon that limits the acceleration values of the points inside string. If the string crosses the null horizon some of its points will exceed the maximal acceleration value and that portion of the string will become causally disconnected from the rest of string outside the horizon.

It is explained why our results differ from those in the literature pertaining the maximal acceleration modifications of the Rindler metric. We also find a modified Rindler metric which has a true curvature singularity at the location of the null horizon due to a finite maximal acceleration. We conclude with some remarks about generalized QFT in accelerated frames and the black hole information paradox. Ternyik Comments: 1 Page. The leading role of publicist-rabbi L. The present work purports to the spectral and nonlinear analysis of intracranially recorded Electroencephalogram EEG time series data resulting in the identification and characterization of a low-dimensional chaos therein. In order to perform the spectral analysis efficiently, a new kind of wavelet, the solitary wavelet is proposed based on the hyperbolic secant function, where it is seen that this wavelet possesses vanishing higher moments with a negative logarithmic slope, thus translating to efficient detection of burst type signals without multiple levels of decomposition and reconstruction.

The spectral analyses of the three categories of EEG data performed using Fourier and Wavelet analyses reveal that seizure EEG spectra, to a greater extent, and non-seizure epileptogenic EEG spectra, to a lesser extent, display prominent high frequency peaks, suggestive of resonant behavior. Nonlinear analysis using phase portraits too confirm the resonance oriented periodic orbits seen in Seizure EEG.

The essence of these results is the observation of a distinct, uniquely identifiable low-dimensional chaotic behavior in EEG taken from epileptogenic region during non-seizure activities. This information can be used both as a preventive epilepsy diagnostic technique, as well as a post-surgical recovery assessment tool, and this forms the novelty of the present work.

The complex nature of the growing organization has in recent years necessitated a fundamental change towards management strategy and formation of policies. In this light, the present article focuses on the use of various tools and techniques of nonlinear analysis, including Time Series, Phase Portrait, Multiscale Analysis, Polar Plots, Largest Lyapunov Exponents, Fractal Dimension and Kolmogorov Entropy to analyze important data such as the share revenue and price, and draw conclusions to reveal key information about public sentiment and market trends.

The management could potentially use this information towards effective formation of various policies such as compensation, dividend declarations and layoff operations. The present work purports to a signal based generation of chaos, thereby offering a radically innovative solution to the issues of tunability caused in conventional system based chaos generation circuits.

Specifically, the Ramanujan Theta Function is seen to represent the output signal of a coupled nonlinear system with two driving signals. Using this concept, the iterative map of the Ramanujan Theta Function is developed using the frequency ratio of driving signals as the control parameter, and the ratio dependent dynamics are studied using the bifurcation plot. The proposed system is implemented in hardware using FPGA and the presence of chaos is validated qualitatively using phase portraits and quantitatively using Lyapunov Exponents, whose trend indeed agree with the one observed in the bifurcation plot.

The innovative perspective of signal based chaos proposed using the Ramanujan Theta Function enables easy tunability in chaotic generation systems and this forms the novelty of the present work. Will find an appropriate journal for it in the next several weeks.

We will from first principles examine what adding acceleration does, and will not do as to the HUP previously derived. In doing so we will be examining a Friedmann equation for the evolution of the scale factor, using explicitly two cases, one case being when the acceleration of expansion of the scale factor is kept in, another when it is out, and the intermediate cases of when the acceleration factor, and the scale factor is important but not dominant.

In doing so we will be tying it in our discussion with the earlier work done on the HUP. The ratio of 2nd derivative of a time derivative , divided by a a is a scale factor set equal to zero would mean that the ratio of the 1st derivative of a time derivative divided by a could have complex solution roots, whereas the ration of the 2nd derivative of a time derivative divided by a with a, the scale factor as a ration not equal to zero, but constant, and large would frequently imply the first time derivative of a divided by a would have three dissimilar real valued roots.

From the sake of physical analysis, the situation with not equal to zero yields more tractable result for which will have implications for the HUP inequality Category: Quantum Gravity and String Theory. Authors: Wayne R. Lundberg Comments: 7 Pages. Terms of the NBWF instanton action are identified with intrinsic metrics of finite-dimensional particle theory. This approach yields a new type of finitary particle theory, in which the string or finite graviton is replaced with band representation geometry.

A band is simply the well-known string with an intrinsic stiffness. Representation geometric metrics of area and curvature are thus intrinsic descriptors of particle mass and energy. The ground states of a band are inherently tripartite having three portions , which motivates assignment of QCD color local gauge fields to portions of the band. For completeness, band-theoretic representation requires a quantum state algebra.

A quantum state algebra that is one-to-one with standard model particle theory was sought -and found. The band theory quantum state algebra is a subgroup of index 12 of a cross product of two wreath products. A subgroup of this unique non-commutative algebra has proven to be with standard model QCD particles, via its fundamental tie to preons.

Further, band theory produces exactly three particle generations or families or flavors. Three flavors of neutrinos are thus predicted by a well-founded particle formulation, which is qualitatively consistent with observations of massive oscillating neutrinos. Band theory is the particulate portion of a comprehensive theory, which includes cyclic cosmology. Cyclic cosmology has been demonstrated to have no cosmological coincidence problem.
