Ho trovato i disegni non sempre all'altezza della fama del maestro e non mi ha convinto soprattutto il replicare, spessa a tutta pagina quando non su due pagine affiancate le opere del protagonista. Non parlo tanto della resa nella celeberrima Grande Onda, quanto piuttosto sul Grande Budda disegnato da Hokusai sull'enorme tela al centro della piazza, tanto per fare un esempio. A livello di trama, non sono riuscito a trovare avvincente il susseguirsi degli eventi, raccontati in maniera cronologica, forse eccessivamente asettica.

Credo, infine, che il personaggio di Hokusai esca parzialmente ridimensionato, piuttosto che esaltato, dalla lettura di questo manga. Forse era proprio questo l'intento di Ishinomori, alla ricerca di una sorta di realismo. Tuttavia, a tratti il carattere scontroso di Hokusai risulta quasi indisponente, soprattutto per quel che riguarda la prima parte della storia.
